                                                      National Junior Honor Society

The National Junior Honor Society is part of the National Organization which serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship.  To receive an invitation to the George West Chapter of NJHS, a student must be in grade 7 or 8.  Students must have completed one full semester at GWJH.  They must have a cumulative average of 90 percent in the four core areas: Math/Algebra, ELA, Science, and Social Studies.  Students who meet the Scholarship requirement are invited to complete an information sheet which is then reviewed by the Faculty Council and membership is offered by a majority vote.

While the Scholarship criterion is important and is to be considered first, membership is never considered on the basis of grades alone. The other areas of Leadership (determined by school activities – leadership positions), Service (determined by community activities), Character (determined by the teacher), and Citizenship (determined by the office) are also integrated based on a point system.

The invitation and selection process takes place in the Spring Semester.  For more information on the NJHS www.nhs.us or contact Linda Clark GWJH NJHS Adviser phone: 449-1914, ext. 3 or email: lclark@gwisd.esc2.net
