Dr. Suzanne Nelson

Interim Superintendent of Schools

George West ISD

 

    Dr. Suzanne Nelson was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado to deaf parents.  She learned to use sign language at the early age of ten months.  She interpreted for her parents the entire time she lived at home.  She has a younger sister who lives in Colorado Springs who is a retired school teacher and is now a registered interpreter for the deaf. 
     Dr. Nelson married her high school sweetheart, Larry.  They have been married for 50 years.  Her husband is a retired Army pilot and a retired math teacher.  They have three adult children:  Susie who is a first grade teacher at Calallen ISD; Sheryl, who is an educational diagnostician for Aransas Pass ISD; and Steven, who is the vice president of production and drilling for Energy XXI Oil Company.  They have five granddaughters and two great grandsons. 
     She has been a teacher, elementary counselor, assistant principal, and principal in Oklahoma.  She received her doctorate from the University of Oklahoma in 1983.  She came to Texas in 1984 to be the Director of Instruction at Tuloso-Midway ISD. She was named Superintendent in March of 1986 and served in that capacity until she retired in January of 1998.  She has served as an Interim Superintendent at Eagle Pass ISD and more recently at Tuloso-Midway ISD.

Dr. Nelson's office is located in the George West ISD administration building at 913 Houston Street.
