GEORGE WEST VS. BISHOP
Last night #14 George West traveled to Bishop in a non-district contest. A scrappy Bishop team held its own with the Longhorns, especially testing the Horns in the first quarter. The Horns struggles weren’t due to a lack of effort, the ball just wouldn’t fall through the hole…maybe too much turkey & dressing last week. Before the half, GW went on a scoring run to regain a comfortable lead at the half.
The second half was not much easier than the first, the Badgers were held at bay, but the boys in blue could not pull away as free throw shooting woes continued. Both teams were in the double bonus before the 4th quarter, and both teams had trouble from the charity stripe. The biggest positive was the team play, and quality performances turned in by players off the bench. Depth was the key to victory in the game, and many different players in many different roles stepped up to seal a victory on the road. FINAL SCORE: GEORGE WEST 64 – Bishop 52

The Longhorns have improved their overall record to 4-0. Next up is a huge opportunity to play against some great basketball programs, and powerhouses in East Texas. GW will travel to participate in the MARION NEILL INVITATIONAL held in Broaddus, TX (near Lufkin). In the first round, GW will take on Crockett, a 3A mainstay in the playoffs of ANY sport. Other teams GW could face include Elgin (4A near Austin), San Augustine (lost deep in playoffs to eventual state champs), Broaddus (#8 in 1A polls), Diboll (3A playoff power), Central Heights (traditionally good), Cherino (well coached traditionally good team), Zavalla and Spurger. We know that it is very difficult for many to attend these games to cheer the boys on, but we feel we need to play these caliber teams to help us reach our goals, and to give the team a great experience in a big time tournament playing teams they don’t see everyday. We will also get the opportunity to practice there SFA University, Angelina College, or Lufkin High School.
The JV also improved its record to 3-0 last night. The game was not pretty at all, but the young Horns rose above all their struggles to outlast Bishop. Outstanding hustle and effort on the defensive end, but turnovers and poor shooting plagued the offense.
